TARGET AUDIENCE

Psycheheel is a practice for adults. This is quite broad, as psychological issues in adults are numerous and diverse. Marjan specializes in treating psychological complaints that arise from negative experiences or adjustment problems during significant life transitions. Below, you can read about the specific target groups that Psycheheel focuses on.

Students

The path to Independence Many students expect to have "the time of their lives," but sometimes this doesn't turn out as hoped. Various circumstances can create problems: illness or death of yourself or a loved one, a disappointing choice of study, a challenging course, traumatic experiences such as assault or drugging, or parents going through a divorce. Issues such as anxiety, fear of faillure, depressive feelings, procrastination, stress from perfectionism, or even burnout can also impact your social life and studies. From 2014 to the end of 2019, Marjan worked as a student psychologist at the University of Groningen (RUG). She still primarily sees students in her practice. She is familiar with this life stage, the different student bubbles, and the associated problems, which allows her to tailor the treatment effectively, complementing the valuable services provided by her former colleagues at RUG (see: RUG Student Service Centre).

Elderly

Loss, grief and (fear of) death In our Western world, especially in this digital age full of distractions, we often prefer not to confront death. Yet, it is something we all face eventually. Whether you are dealing with a terminal illness yourself or have lost a loved one, grief, mourning, and adjustment can be very demanding. Questions around the meaning of life may arise, and it can be challenging to find someone who truly listens and shows understanding. As a result, there is often insufficient space to process loss. Loss of health, work, or a societal role also requires processing. For some, seeking distractions may be a solution, but for others, it is not. Sometimes you may fear the intensity of your emotions and prefer not to deal with them alone at home. At Psycheheel, you can address these issues with a therapist or in a group of peers. Fear of death, even without a direct illness, is a concern that Psycheheel is here to help you with.

(Prospective) Parents

The Path to Parenthood The transition to parenthood is a major life change. It is a beautiful yet challenging phase for many, especially when complications arise. Adjusting to the constant care of another person, changes in your relationship and work, is not easy. Additionally, hormonal fluctuations and sleep deprivation can make you psychologically vulnerable. Psycheheel offers support during this transition to parenthood. CHILDBIRTH TRAUMA The pink cloud can turn gray after a traumatic birth. Not everyone forgets everything once they hold their baby in their arms. Do you have persistent complaints? Or is this even a reason to not want more children? Seek help—EMDR may help you quickly alleviate your symptoms. LOSS AND GRIEF Miscarriages and the loss of a mother or child are tragedies. Give yourself time to process. Most people can overcome this by making space for grief and seeking support from their surroundings. But if you find that you are struggling or have few people to talk to, you are warmly welcome at Psycheheel.

Internationals

Getting used to a new culture A third of Psycheheels clientele are expats or internationals students. Marjan is familiar with the problems that can be experienced when you have to adjust to living in the Netherlands. She is grateful for getting to know so many different people with diverse backgrounds. Welcome!

Thinkers

Getting out of your head Thinkers are accustomed to being in their heads and trying to solve everything through thought. Worrying (often accompanied by sleep problems) is a common issue. You might recognize this: you understand how things work and can put your negative thoughts into perspective, but you still don’t feel better and can’t stop ruminating. While thinking solves many external problems and helps with your studies and work, it is an illusion that we can control our feelings or inner world this way. At Psycheheel, you can address these issues. Together, we will quickly develop a clear problem analysis and then move forward in a less ‘head-centric’ way. We will explore different paths beyond thinking—something you already know how to do—to better understand your inner world and learn to cope with what comes your way. There is also a place at Psycheheel for highly gifted individuals. Highly gifted people encounter additional challenges in daily life. It can be difficult to accept that others think differently, to deal with imperfection, or to focus on what truly suits you. High sensitivity is also a common issue. This can lead to imbalances, psychological complaints, or difficulties in work or study. Unfortunately, the most intelligent people are often not the most successful. Marjan enjoys working with this group.

When you are into shamanism

Beyond the Everyday Starting in 2024, Psycheheel explicitly offers the opportunity to incorporate spirituality into the treatment. More information about this can be found on the 'Shamanic Mental Health Care' page.
